Hot Mocktail: Warm Orange and Bitter Aperitif
This hot mocktail combines a non-alcoholic bitter-orange aperitif with apple, orange and gentle spice.
This hot mocktail combines a non-alcoholic bitter-orange aperitif with apple, orange and gentle spice. It replaces regular Aperol entirely and makes a warm winter drink without sparkling wine.
The quantities make one serving. Measure the ingredients before mixing and chill any mixer. Syrups, juices and bottled alternatives vary in sweetness and acidity, so taste the base before topping up.
Ingredients for one serving
- 50 ml non-alcoholic bitter-orange aperitif
- 100 ml apple juice
- 40 ml water
- 20 ml orange juice
- Small piece of cinnamon stick
- Orange slice
Method
- Gently warm apple juice, water, orange and cinnamon.
- Avoid a rolling boil.
- Stir in the aperitif base and warm briefly.
- Pour into a heatproof glass or mug.
Getting the balance right
Warmth changes the perception of sweetness and spice. Taste at drinking temperature before adding syrup. Too much cinnamon can obscure the aperitif. Use a still base because ready-made sparkling drinks lose carbonation when heated.
Variation and substitutions
Replace 30 ml apple juice with cranberry juice drink for another fruit direction. Briefly infuse a thin orange peel for more citrus aroma and remove before serving.
Preparing several servings
Measure juice, purée and syrup shortly before serving. Add ice and carbonated ingredients when you make the drink. To serve a group, multiply the quantities, but adjust one glass first before mixing the whole pitcher.
Common question
Can heating regular Aperol make it alcohol-free?
Do not rely on that. Start with explicitly non-alcoholic ingredients rather than inferring alcohol content from heating.
