Schweppes Zero: A Guide to Sugar-Free Mixers
Schweppes Zero can reduce the sugar contributed by the mixer.
Schweppes Zero can reduce the sugar contributed by the mixer. Whether the finished cocktail is sugar-free also depends on its juice, syrup and aperitif base.
Choose the flavour first
Choose tonic for bitterness, Wild Berry for berries or ginger ale for ginger. The producer maintains a current Zero range page. An older list claiming exactly four flavours should not be treated as a complete description of today’s range.
The word “Zero” on one mixer does not describe every ingredient in the glass. A cocktail with 100 ml juice still contains the sugar from that juice even if you top it up with a sugar-free mixer.
Recipe: cucumber and Zero tonic
Place three thin cucumber slices and ice in a glass. Add 10 ml lime juice, 100 ml Zero tonic and 50 ml sparkling water. Stir once and garnish with lemon peel. The water softens the tonic without introducing another sweet mixer.
If you add a gin alternative, replace some of the water and check the alternative’s nutrition label. To compare mixers, prepare a second glass with regular tonic using otherwise identical quantities.
Common questions
Does sugar-free mean unsweetened?
No. Read the ingredients: a product may use sweeteners. That distinction matters when choosing the flavour you prefer.
Can Zero soda replace every juice?
Not without changing the recipe. Juice contributes acidity, fruit flavour and body as well as sugar.
Choosing and buying
Compare the actual bottle rather than the brand name alone: product type, stated alcohol content, ingredients, bottle size and suggested serving amount all affect how it works in your recipe. Prices and availability vary by retailer and region. Follow the storage instructions on the product after opening.
The right choice depends on the drink you want to make. For your own comparison, mix each candidate with the same quantity of the same mixer and use equal amounts of ice.
