Grenadine Mocktail: Citrus Recipe and Layering Tips

Grenadine gives mocktails red colour and sweetness.

Serving inspiration from the ProstZero drink collection: ruby grapefruit glow

Grenadine gives mocktails red colour and sweetness. A small measure often goes a long way, especially alongside fruit juice. This recipe combines it with orange, lemon and soda for a straightforward highball.

The quantities make one serving. Measure the ingredients before mixing and chill any mixer. Syrups, juices and bottled alternatives vary in sweetness and acidity, so taste the base before topping up.

Ingredients for one serving

  • 10 ml non-alcoholic grenadine
  • 80 ml orange juice
  • 15 ml lemon juice
  • 90 ml soda
  • Ice

Method

  1. Fill a glass with ice and add the juices.
  2. Slowly add soda.
  3. Pour grenadine gently down the side for a colour gradient.
  4. Stir before drinking to distribute the sweetness.

Getting the balance right

A visible gradient means the ingredients are not evenly mixed. The bottom may therefore taste very sweet. Serve with a spoon or stir after presentation. Grenadine products vary in pomegranate content, so the name does not guarantee one specific fruit profile.

Variation and substitutions

Substitute pineapple juice for orange for a tropical variation. For less sweetness, use 5 ml grenadine and more soda. Extra fruit syrup is usually unnecessary in either version.

Preparing several servings

Measure juice, purée and syrup shortly before serving. Add ice and carbonated ingredients when you make the drink. To serve a group, multiply the quantities, but adjust one glass first before mixing the whole pitcher.

Common question

Is pomegranate juice the same as grenadine?

No. Juice is less concentrated and sweetened differently. It changes volume, acidity and colour, so do not assume a one-for-one substitution.
