Non-Alcoholic Tequila: Alternatives for Margarita and Paloma
Non-alcoholic tequila is a possible base for margarita and Paloma variations.
Non-alcoholic tequila is a possible base for margarita and Paloma variations. Check how the alternative works with lime, grapefruit and a little sweetness.
How to choose a base
A spicy or peppery description does not establish how intense the product feels in a finished drink. Start with a simple recipe. Salt and hot sauce can obscure the base, so assess it without those additions first.
A simple starting drink
Shake 40 ml alternative, 25 ml lime, 30 ml orange and 10 ml agave syrup with ice. Strain over fresh ice. For a Paloma direction, replace orange with grapefruit and add 60 ml soda in the glass.
Compare two products fairly
Taste a small chilled measure, then compare both candidates in the same recipe. Use the same mixer, quantities and amount of ice. Note whether the base remains noticeable after dilution, how sweet it seems and which finish you prefer. Adjust the ratio afterwards. This avoids confusing a better mixer with a better base.
Labels and shopping
Check the product type, alcohol statement and after-opening storage instructions. If you specifically want 0.0%, choose by that statement rather than the word “non-alcoholic” alone. Compare cost per serving too: bottle volume divided by your measure gives the theoretical number of drinks. Check current prices and stock with the retailer.
Is agave syrup the same as a tequila alternative?
No. Agave syrup primarily sweetens. It replaces neither the flavour nor the liquid volume of a spirit alternative.
