Pomegranate Mocktail: A Tart Red Spritz
A pomegranate mocktail gets colour and tart fruit from juice rather than grenadine.
A pomegranate mocktail gets colour and tart fruit from juice rather than grenadine. That lets you adjust sweetness separately. Orange rounds out the bold base while soda supplies the spritz effect.
The quantities make one serving. Measure the ingredients before mixing and chill any mixer. Syrups, juices and bottled alternatives vary in sweetness and acidity, so taste the base before topping up.
Ingredients for one serving
- 70 ml pomegranate juice
- 30 ml orange juice
- 10 ml lemon juice
- 10 ml simple syrup if needed
- 100 ml soda
- Ice
Method
- Stir juices together and taste.
- Add syrup only if needed.
- Pour over ice.
- Add soda slowly and stir gently.
Getting the balance right
Pomegranate juices vary in tartness and concentration. Check whether you are using pure juice or a sweetened blend. Seeds look attractive in the glass but do not replace juice and release little flavour during a short serving time.
Variation and substitutions
Replace 40 ml soda with non-alcoholic ginger beer for spice. For a softer fruit mixture, increase orange to 50 ml and reduce pomegranate accordingly.
Preparing several servings
Measure juice, purée and syrup shortly before serving. Add ice and carbonated ingredients when you make the drink. To serve a group, multiply the quantities, but adjust one glass first before mixing the whole pitcher.
Common question
Is grenadine a direct replacement?
No. It is usually much sweeter and more concentrated. Start with 10–15 ml and increase the water.
